Pleating in Action: Daenerys Targaryen- Game of Thrones Costume
In 2011, HBO introduced a new show called “Game of Thrones.” This program was based on the series A Song of Fire and Ice written by George R. R. Martin. Over the past years the show has become incredibly popular, and it’s characters are growing more and more well-known.
Daenerys Targaryen is particularly well-loved, at least by our client, Kathleen O’Brien, who made a business for herself creating screen-accurate cosplay costumes for “The Mother of Dragons” and other popular cosplay characters.
Below is a picture of the pleated dress worn by Khaleesi Daenerys Targaryen that O’Brien brought to life at the 2014 C2E2 Convention in Chicago:

The Daenerys costume was made using a sunburst accordion pleated skirt, made by us here at International Pleating. We worked closely with O’Brien to create just the exact right look for this design – which we definitely think turned out great!

A Little More About PungoPungo & Kathleen O’Brien
About four years ago, O’Brien started her PungoPungo custom costuming business. This was fueled by her love of character development through costuming. Her background is in costume design for theatre, and she told us, “Costuming is part of the story. It is part of the visual journey for each character, and it’s their journey that makes us identify with and love (or hate) them.”
In September 2013, O’Brien expanded PungoPungo into her full time career, creating costumes in her studio in Delaware. Each costume can take anywhere from half a day to 50 hours to complete, including fabric manipulations and handwork.
Her most popular pieces are the Game of Thrones costumes, but she has made Alphonse Mucha-inspired gowns, Lady Gaga costumes, leather accessories, jewelry, and even some athletic clothing for rock climbers. O’Brien has plans to further expand her business to offer other Game of Thrones inspired costumes, and cosplay from current film, TV, and video games. She and other cosplayers will wear these costumes to conventions in the future, such as San Diego Comic Con, Otakon, Dragon Con, and NYCC.
