Garment Upcycling & Recreation
We don’t just alter clothes. We recreate them.
Fifth-generation Garment District atelier. We disassemble. We reimagine. We remake.
What Is Garment Upcycling?
Garment upcycling is taking a piece that’s already made — vintage, worn out, loved to death, whatever — and completely reimagining it. Not just mending it or altering the hem. You’re taking it apart at the seams, stripping it down to fabric and maybe components, and rebuilding it into something new. It could be a completely different garment, could be the same silhouette but modernized, could be taking your mother’s wedding dress and transforming it into a rehearsal dinner dress, or shortening a dress into a top and using the scraps for something else entirely. You drive what happens — you bring us the piece and the vision, and we engineer a solution using actual manufacturing techniques, not tailoring tricks. That’s upcycling. It’s transformation, not repair.
Alterations Versus Upcycling
Most alterations are simple nips and tucks that address the fit of a garment. Upcycling is a much heavier deconstruction — one that could result in a completely different purpose. A scarf can become a blouse, and a blouse can become a dress. Upcycling is about fundamentally changing the structure of a garment.
Why Upcycle With Us
We’re not just a tailor shop — we’re a manufacturer. We’ve been making clothes for the garment industry for five generations. We understand the entire process from textile creation to garment construction. We have the knowledge and the equipment: CNC cutters, pattern-making tools, digitizing equipment, bonding machines, steaming equipment — actual manufacturing infrastructure. When you bring us your piece, you’re bringing it to the infrastructure of the fashion industry. We have the tools, the knowledge, and the craftsmanship to completely reimagine yours.
A critical component to the upcycling process is analysis before disassembly. Some garments are assembled in such an intricate way that once disassembled, reassembly becomes much more arduous. We’ve had many clients come to us to fix mistakes made by less experienced makers who disassembled pieces without understanding what they were getting into, creating unnecessary labor and complications. We assess every piece before we touch a single seam. We can tell you exactly what to expect — and what’s actually possible — before you commit to anything.
The Process
Consultation — Send us a photograph of your garment and what you’d like to do, along with any inspiration photos. We’ll set up a time to discuss your options either in person or via Zoom. Together we’ll explore what’s possible, discuss estimated project scope, costs, and timing.
Measurements — We take precise measurements to ensure the rebuilt garment fits you perfectly.
Disassembly — We carefully disassemble whatever we need to and prepare the materials for reconstruction.
Fittings — You may have one or more fittings as the piece comes together. This is where we dial in the fit, explore design possibilities through draping, and make sure the vision is becoming reality.
Completion — Your garment is finished, pressed, and ready to wear.
